Positive Behaviour Management

I was reflecting back on the different ways I have supported positive behaviour management over the years. Gonzo was one of the examples that popped into my mind! He went home with a child and his book and had many adventures. Check him out!

Making positive connections between home and school is a vital support in successful behaviour management systems. When children know that their teachers and parents communicate, and that positive, or not so positive information goes home, their desire to behave appropriately and please their parents makes behaviour management a more intrinsic motivation. Classroom mascots such as Gonzo (I have also used 'Magnificent Manners Monkey' and 'Spaceman') are successful because not only does good news go home, but there is something tangible there too. And writing and sharing the stories is equally motivating for young students.

Currently- in 2016, I am teaching Years 0-7, and coming up with motivating and rewarding systems that suit all levels is more challenging. I have used a "Writing Kit" in a similar fashion to Gonzo and Magnificent Manners Monkey. The Writing Kit it s Minions style suitcase filled with stationery, craft materials, a large modelling book and writing motivators.  The idea is that one child each day takes the Writing Kit home, publishes a piece of writing, share it at home and then share it again at school the next morning. It has been very popular.
